Phoenix Bag by StephaniePride Phoenix Bag by StephaniePride
GAAAAH!!! I had a big, blow by blow, description typed out and the computer ate it :(

Materials - Leather, calico lining ( [link] and [link] )
Mostly handsewn because my sewing machine died AGAIN! (grr, I just had it serviced too!) The strap ([link]) is machine done but most of the rest is hand sewn.

The phoenix on the flap is another incarnation of this [link] . I outlined it in ink and then added some colour with some 'rub on metallic paint' that I bought a few years ago. It acts more like leather polish than paint, it just sinks right in and leaves the leather with this lovely shimmery soft metallic sheen. I love it :boogie: (closeup [link] )

EDIT - Due to the fact that my sewing machine has become posessed by a particularly noxious leather eating demon, I can't make any more of these bags.
Sorry :(

This is just too beautiful! Has your machine recovered enough to start making these again?

Thanks! It's still one of my favourite bags :D

Unfortunately I've had to ban myself from making any more leather products for now. My machine simply cannot cope, and neither can my fingers when I try to hand sew the stuff ;P So until I manage to get myself a nice strong industrial sewing machine (and somewhere to put it) I've put all my leather into storage, somewhere out of the way so I can't see and be tempted into destroying yet another sewing machine. I've got boxes and boxes of the stuff because every now and then a friend (or a friend of a friend) will get rid of a leather lounge and invite me to help myself to the salvagable sections. So when I do finally get that Industrial machine I will definitely be industrious!

What a lovely idea. I really like the pheonix being subtle and just lightly coloured with the metallic paint. The flap taking it's shape from the pheonix is brilliant too. I think you'll get loads of comments when you use this bag.

Oh damn, that makes me reaaallly want a deep red leather bag with my "Dragonscales" picture done on it somehow (it's in my *starglo21 gallery). I'd be more than happy to work out some kind of deal with you!

Thats a relly nice pic! I'd love to have a go at it. I don't have any Red leather tho... The leather in this one is 'recycled' leather. I reclaimed it from my parents old lounge when they replaced it - the parts that had been sat apon were very worn, but the rest was virtually untouched! Lots of lovely free leather! :boogie:
I can get red Leather, but I'll need to work that into my costing... why am I telling you this? you're an artist! you know the deal. I've got too used to justifying myself to plebs who can't figure out why I won't price things like I'm from a chinese sweatshop...

Meh, I'm babbling! I must be tired.
Let me source some red leather and I'll figure out a rough costing, and then we can work out a deal, If you're still interested I mean. :)

Of course I am! If you like, maybe we can work a trade into the deal, or I can just pay you straight up.

Is the flap sewn on separately? Or is it all one piece?

I think my machine would have a heart attack and die if I tried to make it sew leather, so I can understand yours having a bit of a fit! ;)

Nicely done, I love the prescision and neatness of your work in general. And the symmetry!

Might have a question about a commission..... will note ya

The Flap and the back panel are all one piece. LoL, me and my sewing machine have this ongoing war for supremacy. So far it's winning. I don't think it likes me much ;) However it's fixed and waiting to see how much it can make me yell in my next project, so fire away with the questions! :D

Sounds interesting!
So do you mean just a straight 'collar' or would there be some shaping at the edges? Do you want designs on the leather the way I have on the bag flap? The leather I'm using here is fairly thin upholstery leather so it would be very flexible, even with two layers.

okies, bugger the note ;)

I have an idea for jewellery - it's gonna be based on a leather type collar. However, I don't like black or shiny leather much, so the kind you have looks about right. It might involve being closed by press studs? Or clasps or hooks? Not sure yet. I just know I want it to be a double layer of leather, with minimal stitching around the edges.

wow, i second waht ellygator said. Beautiful. Now i look at my own hand-made leather bag (not made by me) and i dont like it as much as i used to!!! (it's just leather patchwork - it's pictured in my featured deviation)

that is absolutely beautiful. You've inspired me :P I would like to make my own one day. So far my leatherwork has consisted of making my own rabbit fur mittens. Maybe i'll put them up

Wow, rabbit fur mittens? I'd love to see them! They must be so warm. Is the fur on the inside or the outside?

the fur is on the inside!!!! i am obsessed with 'fuzzy' and 'furry' and i used to carry around a rabbit pelt to 'pet' when i felt like it and it totally creeped ppl out so i made mittens. They are slightly less obnoxious :P

I'll post them a.s.a.p. you gotta see them. they are hilarious!

This is such a beautiful idea. I'm normally not one for lugging a bag around - if it doesn't fit in my trouser pocket it's not coming with! But this one could completely change my mind. What a wonderful idea so perfectly translated into leather. And what dedication to do this by hand and make it look so precise!

I'm glad you like it. I just sort of made it up as I went along. I think it turned out OK. I've made a lot of bags over the years, I'll have to try and get some of them on here. I've never bothered to photograph them, but I suppose I should...

As for doing it by hand, it was anger at my sewing machine that drove me on :D I actually prefer to sew by hand when I can, it's quieter and I can do it sitting in a comfy chair on the verandah, it's very relaxing. On the other hand, sewing machines are much faster ;) Or they are when they work. My fingers were pretty sore by the time I finished this one tho, leather is tough, even when you use pliers to pull the needle through.

Suggestion, maybe...um, I think it would look even cooler if the phoenix was a different shade of leather stitched into the bag. And all the little ink lines actually be either burnt leather or black stitching.

I actually originally intended to brand the image into the leather. I've been putting off making this bag for a long while because I wanted to do that. However I have finally faced the fact that I am never going to get EITHER of my pyrography machines back from my Dad. He's confiscated both of them on the grounds that they are not safe. He used to work as an electrician, so everytime I buy some kind of machinery, he rushes over to have a look at it and make sure it's not going to kill me (because I cannot be trusted and neither can the manufacturers or the board of standards *rolls eyes*).
First time I bought a pyrography machine I bought an expensive, top of the line, bells and whistles one. I mentioned it to him, he came over, took the shell off, decided that the power supply was too close to something and took it home to fix it up because, and I quote 'it will only take me an hour or so'. That was eight years ago.
Second time I bought one I didn't tell him. He came over to do something, saw it where I had thoughtlessly left it out in the open, and off came the cover. It was also declared 'unsafe' and was taken home to be fixed. That was two years ago. :angered:

I have lost over a thousand dollars of machinery to that man, and they ALL 'will only take a couple of hours to put right'. Blah, I love my Dad, but I swear I'm going to kill him one day :-X I've tried telling him that I'll take my chances with the machinery, but he just gets that 'look' and takes it anyway....

So, um, thats the reason I didn't burn it into the leather. :D

Sorry for unloading on you Matt, I didn't mean to when I started typing. It's just that I really want to use those machines and when I think about it, all this steam starts coming out of my ears :pissedoff:

Haha...that's okay. ^_^ My father actually used to work with leather. When he was younger he would make my mom's purses. And he also has the same amazing ability to put things off...
